A critical essay on Final Fantasy XII

As part of my quest to become a video game writer, I applied to two graduate programs that specialize in interactive entertainment: the Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon (which I am attending starting this fall) and the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy at the University of Central Florida.

As part of my application to FIEA's producer track, I had to submit an essay analyzing the design elements of a video game with emphasis on why the development team made the choices they did and how effectively they were implemented. The prompt suggested I pick a game I had played more than once, and one which I felt fell short of my expectations.

For that reason, I chose Final Fantasy XII by Square Enix. I have created a separate page for the essay; you can find the link above.

I welcome and encourage responses to my essay: do you agree or disagree, how did you respond to the game, are there other areas of the game's design you feel strongly about, is there another game you felt disappointed with for similar reasons, etc.

Please note that angry or rude comments will be deleted. If you want to rage, go do it in a forum; I would like my blog to be a place where people can discuss their opinions about video games openly and honestly :) Whether we stand together or on opposite sides, we can agree that the conversation is worth having.

Who is this chick?

Howdy, all!  I'm Katherine, the self-entitled Video Game Goddess, and welcome to my website!  Okay, so it's technically a blog, but I don't have the spare change or internet savvy for an actual website so this will have to do.

You may be wondering how someone might think they can get away with calling themselves a video game goddess.  Well, to be honest, I probably don't have the experience necessary to deserve such an accolade (yet), but it has a nice ring to it and the URL was available, so here we are.

The purpose of this website/blog is to:
a) establish an online presence for myself as a gamer, a writer, and a video game writer in the making
b) present my opinions on a variety of topics relevant to gaming, such as critiques of video games and my thoughts about the industry
c) connect with other gamers online
d) put my work on display for possible employers

(Side note: is it just me, or is blogger maddeningly buggy? >_<  Someone get a QA tester in here, stat!)

A little bit about me: I am a graduating senior at Carnegie Mellon University studying Japanese and Creative Writing.  I am a sister of Delta Delta Delta sorority, an honors student, and in the fall I will begin a two-year masters program at CMU's Entertainment Technology Center.  I have been playing video games since I was ten, and it is my dream to become a video game writer.

I'm afraid this short introduction is all I have time for today.  See you soon!
